“I never understood why girls consider Sanji to be this suave gentleman, he’s a leech that makes an ass of himself whenever a pretty girl is in his vicinity.” - confession by lavender-and-creme.
Oh shut up and watch One Piece because you obviously never have.
I actually partly agree with this confession, and I like Sanji a lot. He is just stupid when any girl is around and I wouldn’t want to be treated like he treats women. He lives by outdated rules that were never right; there’s no sense in men having to be especially polite to women. General politeness and courtesy should go both ways, and more isn’t needed just because someone has boobs. Plus he is perverted. You can’t state otherwise, he is.
Still, that’s just a part of his personality, I really like the rest.
A.) Sanji is not /always/ stupid around girls. He does it when there’s a lighthearted mood. When things get serious, he has disagreed with and contradicted even his beloved Nami-san for the sake of what’s correct.
B.) They are not rules to Sanji. They are simply things he likes to do because he believes that women should feel special about themselves. Yes, he is a pervert, but on top of that if you pay any attention to his character what defines his action is at the root a respect for women above men. Even if it’s an unnattractive, too young, or older woman, he has a tendency to be more respectful of females, period. I don’t agree with that myself, but I respect it immensely in his character as something he believes.
I seriously do not understand this apparent belief that a man can’t be a pervert and a gentleman at the same time. In fact, I’m sure plenty of our ‘gentlemen’ are closet perverts, Sanji’s just open about it.
You can’t deny that Sanji is a pervert. But you can’t deny that he is also a gentleman. He does what he does expecting absolutely nothing in return, and he continues to do it no matter how much Nami (and some others occassionally) uses him because it’s something he /believes/ in no matter what he gets out of it.
What I meant is, while I don’t mind him being perverted, I don’t respect his gentlemanliness. I don’t respect putting women’s needs before those of men. It’s fine if you do, though; I just wanted to address the strong backlash any confession of this nature tends to get. Perverts can be gentlemen.
As for it being rules, he certainly is restricted by his values. He lost to Kalifa because he refuses to kick women, and after the battle, he said he’s unable to kick women. I feel bad about that, for the strong women he insults by refusing to fight them, and for him, because he gets hurt because of it.
That’s a flaw of his, and flaws tend to add to a character. He wouldn’t be near as interesting if his woman-obsession was removed. That doesn’t stop me from disliking that aspect of him, though.
Sorry for creating an argument. I don’t mean to insult Sanji at all.
Personally I think it’s a little uptight to feel insulted because a person has a moral or belief that leads them to not be able to fight you because of your gender. I sort of look at things from a neutral light, and have not been exposed to a lot of sexism in my life, so I guess it just comes across as less insulting and more interesting for me.
What I mean by saying they’re not rules, is that he doesn’t really follow it out of a sense of duty to please some version of society or a deity. He just does it because he wants to no matter how he looks in the process. The no-kicking-woman portion is one that is perhaps a little more of a rule, but a lot of men in real life have that belief simply because they think it makes them look girly if they hit a girl. I think Sanji has it because he can’t bare to do it because he has so much respect for them.
Anyway, I’m just musing now xD. I get where you’re coming from- he definitely annoys the shit out of me sometimes, and I’ve face-palmed my way to the moon and back in some instances. But I guess even while I don’t agree with his opinions, I like him for them anyway. I guess you could say I especially admire him for staying so true to something that makes him appear so idiotic and absurd, despite how intelligent and resourceful, and otherwise logical he is.
